Fernie Alpine Ski Team

fast matters March 2

To all FAST members;

Hang in there – two weeks to go!

FAST FACTS:  Congratulations to all of our K2 athletes who competing at the K2 nationals in Collingwood.  Special mention to Hallie MacLachlan and Jamie Honsberger who came 4th and 9th in the Super Combined respectively.  Jamie Honsberger also came 14th in the GS and Stephie Gartner 16th.  Great showing.  Still a few events to go.

E1 PROGRAM - The 12 week E1 Program of instructed lessons has come to and end but the E1 season is far from over.  We still have the ski-a-thon on March 27 and the Year end Race and banquet on April 3.  Details below.

E1 SKI-A-THON - On Saturday March 27 at 9:30 a.m. FAST E1 skiers will be holding the annual Ski-a-Thon.  The Ski-a-Thon is a fund raiser for the Fernie Alpine Ski Team, which enables the club to buy much needed equipment.  This fund raiser, along with the many volunteers that help each year, allows FAST to charge lower fees and involve more children in skiing.  Your support would be greatly appreciated!

How It Works:

1)     Print off the Pledge form (attachment) and sign up as many sponsors as you can.  The pledges are for a dollar amount per lap of “Spruce”, the run beside the Haul Back T-bar.

2)     Ski up to 20 laps on Saturday March 27, starting at 9:30 am

3)     Collect the money and bring it to the FAST banquet.

To make it fun for the participants, several coaches will be setting up race courses on Spruce for the racers to hone their skills in preparation for the Club Championships.   We will also have a radar gun, so you can check your speed!

All participants will receive hot dogs or hamburgers for lunch, provided by the club.  A minimum pledge donation of $30 is required.

The following prizes can be earned by participants:

$50 ---Hand Held Game

$100 ---Cool Hat

$200 ---Toque & Goggles

CLUB CHAMPIOSHIP RACE APRIL 3– This classic year end event will be held on the Bear run this Saturday April 3.  There is no coaching this day so it is up to the kids and parents to get to the top of the Bear.  It will be a two run dual race format.  One run on each course. No reruns.  We will start by the following times:

E1 – 10 to 11:00 am

E2 – 11:00 to 11:30

K1/K2/J/FIS – 11:30 to 12:30

Bring your cameras, cow bells and sun tan lotion.  This is a high energy-high profile-family fun day.

YEAR END BANQUET APRIL 3 -    Year End Banquet at the Fernie Community Centre at 6:00 pm.  A must attend for all the kids.  No athlete goes home empty handed.  We are following the awards with a dance this year.

FAST ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING APRIL 4- Even more fun is our Annual General Meeting which will be held on April 4 at 1 pm at Timberline Lodge at the hill.   If you want your questions answered or want to get more involved this is your chance.

PARENT VS ATHLETE RACE DAY APRIL 4 - On Sunday April 4 at 10 am we are having the annual Parent vs Athlete dual slalom on Spruce.  This is a pure fun event where you get to test your skills against your kids or against other parents.  Everyone welcome.

CLOSING THOUGHT This past weekend the comment was made to me that we are lucky to have such a great club for our kids.  Although I appreciate the compliment, I have to take polite exception to the part about luck.  It reminded me of the words of the great U.S. president Thomas Jefferson. Someone once commented to him that he was “lucky” to be enjoying both fame and fortune in his lifetime.  To this he very astutely replied:

"I am a big believer in luck, and I find, the harder I work -  the more of it I have".

This is certainly the case at FAST.  We have a great program because of the hard work of our coaches.  There is no luck involved. Each ski day they show up to coach and mentor our kids.  Each ski day they perform above and beyond the call of duty.  We also have countless parent volunteers who work tirelessly year-round and give up their ski days and evenings to make sure we have the best experience possible for our kids.

If I have not said it loud enough or clear enough before I want to thank all of our coaches and volunteers.  We are "lucky" indeed.

Best Regards,

Chris
