Fernie Alpine Ski Team

FAST Matters

To all FAST Members,

FAST FACTS – The season may be coming to a close but FAST is still in full swing.  We were active across the country this past weekend in three provinces an at 5 different venues;

Fernie – Our E1s held a ski-a-thon and raised over $5,000 of much needed funds for our club.  Not bad for a group of 4 to 8 year olds!

Many to thank here.  Scott Gibbons, Lyle Skaien, Geoff Seagram, Shirley Timm on the BBQ, Bean and Pat Hamilton did a great job as lap counters, and E1 Coaches Sanne De Groot and Carmen Smith were the official face painters.  Thank you to all!!!!

White Water – E2/K1/K2/J Zone Finals – Callum O’Connor 1st in Slalom, Eric Slubicki 2nd in GS, Julia Slubicki 2nd in GS, Sonja Lake 2nd in GS & 3rd SL, Kyle Maclean 3rd in GS

CLUB CHAMPIOSHIP RACE APRIL 3 – This classic year end event will be held on the Bear run this Saturday April 3.  There is no coaching this day so it is up to the kids and parents to get to the top of the Bear.  It will be a two run - dual race format.  One run on each course. No reruns.  We will start at the following times:

YEAR END BANQUET APRIL 3 -    Year End Banquet at the Fernie Community Centre at 6:00 pm.  A must attend for all the kids.  No athlete goes home empty handed.  We are following the awards with a dance this year.  We will have a record at the door of those who have already paid.  $25 per adult.

FAST ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING APRIL 4- Even more fun is our Annual General Meeting which will be held on April 4 at 1 pm at Timberline Lodge – King Fir building – Centennial Room at the hill.   If you want your questions answered or want to get more involved this is your chance.

PARENT VS ATHLETE RACE DAY APRIL 4 - On Sunday April 4 at 10 am we are having the annual Parent vs Athlete dual slalom on Spruce.  This is a pure fun event where you get to test your skills against your kids or against other parents.  Everyone welcome.

CLOSING THOUGHT – Yesterday I had the pleasure of having lunch with Emily Brydon.  After 13 years on the national ski team Emily has retired from competitive ski racing.  She leaves with three Olympic games, 9 World Cup podiums and 10 national championships to her credit. An impressive racing career by any standard.

I have known Emily for many years.   Much more than just a skier, I have always been even more impressed with Emily as a person.  Besides her skiing she has formed the Emily Brydon Youth Foundation and is active in Right to Play.  Emily dedicates a significant amount of her free time to help others.   Most of us do not start thinking of helping others until much later in life.  Emily is all of 29 and been at it for many years already.

Our club creed is “Top Performance - on and off the slopes”.  Emily personifies that creed to a standard the rest of us will struggle to equal.

CONGRATULATIONS EMILY!!!  I am sure you will apply your tremendous enthusiasm and spirit to the next chapter of your life as you did to ski racing.  On behalf of all FAST members and alumni I would like to wish you all the best in the future.  You deserve the best life has to offer!

I hope to see everyone at the race and banquet on Saturday!!!

Best regards,

Chris
