Fernie Alpine Ski Team

To all FAST members,

After three years as club scribe this will be my last FAST Matters.  Future editorial license is passed on to Rod and Lisa Bratton.  Take it away…

FAST FACTS – On Saturday evening we held our season ending banquet in Fernie and I think it has to be recorded as a huge success.  The community centre was packed and the dance was a big hit with the kids.  An awesome addition to this annual event.

BIG thanks to Bean Hamilton for being Chief Organizer Officer of this event.  It was her first time leading this event and I think she has earned herself a permanent spot here.  Outstanding effort.

I also want to thank Eric Roesler (K2 Coach) for stepping in as the DJ.  He did a super job and saved us $500 at the same time.  It never ceases to amaze me the resources and talents we have within our club.  Eric is heading to Ottawa for the summer but we certainly hope to see him back next year.  He is a positive addition to our coaching staff, not to mention to our shinny hockey games.

I also want to make special mention of Alex Bratton (14 years old) and Elly Foster (8) who came up on stage to thank the coaches on behalf of all the athletes.  It takes a lot of courage for a young person to stand in front of hundreds of people and speak.  I thought both of them spoke very well and from the heart.  Well done. Top Performance!

Thank you also to everyone who helped set up, organize and clean up.

Attached are GPS files which show our race course from Saturday.  Thank you to Steve Koles who skied the course with the GPS unit to get this data.  It shows Fernie in the summer so you have to imagine the white stuff.  Check it out!

CLOSING THOUGHT(S) – For the past three years I have had the privilege of acting as FAST president.  At the AGM the baton was passed to Rod Bratton.  Rod has three children in the club (Alex, Cassie and Lexie).  Those of you who are active in the club will know Rod and his wife Lisa from their many volunteer efforts and of course – social events.  I want to thank Rod for taking on the role – it is no small commitment.

Those of you who know me well know why I am so passionate about FAST.  About 35 years ago in my teen years I had a ski coach who had a HUGE and positive impact on my life.  I owe that coach more than I know how to express.  If 35 years from now just one  former FAST athlete tells me that FAST had a direct and positive impact on their life I will consider all of our efforts a big success.

A few parting thoughts:

1.      I want to thank everyone for their support over the past three seasons.  I cannot even begin to count the number of people who have contributed to the club in some way during that time.  I have made countless new friends and have learned a great deal.  I feel fortunate to have worked with Rod Timm for whom I have the highest respect and admiration.  When I started as president we already had a super club.  I did my best to raise the bar just a little higher.  I hope I had some success.

2.      I want to thank Rod Bratton for taking the role of President.  I wish him every success and I hope all of you continue to support Rod as you supported me.  I know I will be doing everything I can to help Rod out.  I know he will do his best to keep raising the bar even higher.

3.      As I have said many many times – FAST is the best group of people I know – This club rocks!

Over and out!

Chris
